No one likes to be at a boring party. And, for that matter, no one likes hosting a boring party. But, a lot of people love going to live theater. Seeing a play has the immediacy and potential for interaction between actors and audience that a movie just doesn’t have.
The Play Is The Thing To Liven Up A Boring Party
Some plays are just as fun to read as they are to see. You could have your party guests live-read a play together and make your get-together more fun. To make this work, the host should act as director. He or she should choose a classic play and then hand out parts and copies of the play to each of the guests. Then everyone would gather around and start to read the lines, being as hammy or as sincere as their inclinations and talents permit.
Shakespeare Or Something More Modern
Hold your party in a tent and imagine your party guests being transported to the Globe Theater of Shakespeare’s time as they read together ‘Macbeth’ or ‘As You Like It.’ The Bard works pretty well in a party setting, especially one of the comedies, as your guests try to stumble through Elizabethan blank verse.
You could choose a more modern play if the classics are not your thing. Bookstr has a selection of plays including Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ that it claims are just as fun to read as they are to see.
Try to choose a play that can easily be gotten through in an evening. ‘Hamlet,’ for example, can take four hours if you attempt to get through it all in one sitting.
Post Production Fun
After the play reading, if you have time, everyone can critique everyone else’s performance and discuss some of the more nuanced aspects of the work, including symbolism, character motivation, and so on. At the end of the evening, your guests will not only have had a great time, but might have gotten some cultural illumination along the way.
