With summer upon us, many people will be spending more time outside. They will be hosting barbecues, playing sports outside, attending outdoor events and enjoying other outdoor activities. Along with outdoor fun, comes an increased risk for things like sunburn, dehydration, and heat stroke. Luckily, there are several things you can do to have a fun, safe summer, especially when you are gathering with friends and family for an outdoor celebration.

Sunscreen and Other Sun Protection

Even if you do not burn easily, it is important to use sunscreen this summer, especially if you are going to be outside for several hours at a time. Be sure to apply sunscreen to the often overlooked places, such as the back of your neck, your scalp, and your feet. Your lips also need to be protected from the sun. While you may not want to apply sunscreen to them, an SPF lip product will help to protect your lips from the sun. It is also important to be sure to reapply sunscreen often, especially if you get wet or sweating.

Of course, it is important to not rely entirely upon sunscreen to protect you from the sun. Hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing can also help you avoid skin damage.

Water

While getting enough water is important all year, the risk of dehydration is higher when the weather is warmer. Even if you do not enjoy drinking water, you can eat foods high in water content, such as celery, cucumbers, watermelon, and many other fruits and vegetables. You may even want to consider trying a few new watermelon recipes this summer.

Shade

When you are spending time outside, it is important to have an area where you can go to rest or relax that is out of the sun. Whether you have a shady tree, a tent or canopy, a screened in porch, or another area, be sure to not spend your entire day in the sun.
